I used to do all my writing at my desk, perched properly on a chair. Lately, I do it Roman-style, reclining sybaritically on my left side like an Alma Tadema painting, propped up by cushions. Honest.

Come to think of it Mark, did you see the link to him Aretzios posted? His work might also inspire you:

Edward Alma Tadema

I went to the Tut exhibit in Philly. It was great... then wound up going to Egypt the next summer, which was even GREATER!

I'd love seeing photos! Please do share! :)

I was reading that you were considering doing Roman art in your home. Four years ago, we built on a sun-room. I call it my triclinium, and I did Roman art on the walls. I'm no artist, but it turned out quite nice. Its' where I do all my writing. :)

Jeff couldn't get any time off during my birthday and unfortunately he works for the state and his pay has been drastically cut back...plus other stuff that didn't put him in a mood for a long extended trip to LA. We did however get to see the Tut exhibit and also the Palace of the Legion of honor. They ticket to Tut is also good for for the Legion of Honor....which to my surprise (I hadn't seen it in 15 years and now through the eyes of a more Rome enthusiast) is basical a 1/4 scale replica of the Porticus Pompey. It is actualy a replica of the Hôtel de Salm in Paris that from what I have read was based on the Imperial forums of Rome.....only thing is, the Imperila Forums all had free standing temples. The only one with an inset structure within a porticus was the Theatre of Pompey.

Took tons of photos and changed the main images on wiki for both the SF Legion of Honor and the de young museum. Great day. Wonderful statues. Copies of copies. But then there were the Rodin sculptures which are original casts....copies from the artist. There are something like 29 Thinkers. The legion has one, also lots of original work by masters of impersionism.

I discovered I was in SF when Tut was last there in 79....but we went to the Dresden collection at the Legion. Pretty sure I would have enjoyed seeing the death mask which was what I really wanted to see.....but that no longer travels out of egypt. The highlight for me was the Aknahtun stuff. Loved that. No pics at the de young except for out side shouts and me pretending to be Ceciro on the amphitheater. The Legion let us go wild taking pics of everything but the special exhibits. Great pieces of Greek, Roman and Egyptian art.

I did really enjoy seeing the reall gold workd from Tuts tomb.

I was a little mad a Jeff when I found out Hawas was at the opening. We were in the city but he thought it would be to crowded. Dammit.

I have to post some pics if anyone is interested.

Hi Mark, thanks for the vibes. I'm repeating myself from long ago on this board... but I got to meet Mr. Harryhausen too and had about a half hour discussion with him, what a sweetheart! I'd brought pictures I took of the Greek Temples in Paestum, and he confirmed that was where he shot the scene of the harpies attacking Phineaus in "Jason & the Argonauts". It was a book signing and he autographed mine, but talking with him was better. We discovered both our favorite ancient ruins were Petra in Jordan. And did you know his wife is a descendant of Dr. Livingstone, the African explorer? He said he hates modern movies, with their violent themes and stars like Arnold the Terminator and Sly Stallone, that there are too many explosions and not enough story. I agree.

Yeah, good for you Jeff finally came around about ]the murals! Ya know I'm tired of urging you... but if you want some imspriation, you MUST come down to LA to see the Pompeian Villa Exhibit at the LACMuseum. It is all that! One wall is covered with a garden mural, but I particularly loved a new discovery, three walls frrom a triclinium (dining room) they have set up in situ. The background is the distinctive color 'rosso Pompeiana', the Pompeian red you will find all over the city. The architectural outlines are gold. Apollo is centered playinbg his lyre, surrounded by the muses holding objects defining their stations. Just lovely.
(Plus you could see the Getty... It is there until Oct 4th, what happened to those birthday plans?)

I also recommend a wonderful book that has many many examples of Pompeii frescos for inspiation, called Pompeii AD 79, Treasure of Rediscovery by Dr. Richard Brilliant. I got mine second hand on www.abebooks.com for a great price. Otherwise it is pricey but well worth it. Really big coffee table size.

I can't stress enough, what an ideal exhibit this is for your purposes, for it concentrates on the wealthy and their pleasure villas, art and objects. Let me know if you do decide! (And I don't make commission :-p)

Their remaking Clash of the Titans?

Interesting. I got to meet Mr. Harryhausen at a convention years ago and got his autograph on an article about Clash in "Starlog" magazine.

I am sending you positive vibes Elare.

Oh, and by the way, I conveinced Jeff to let me paint the walls in the house in the style of ancient roman domus'.

So now i have to decide what exactly to do and how far to go.

I don't want to just copy something already done, but really like some of them a lot.

Gratias, Hyker!B-)

In case anyone is interested, I found a new site that has lots of cool information on our ancient world:

www.livius.org

There is an alphabetical list of covered subjects, or you can enter a search.

Here is one I like to use for Greek information, you could spend hours on it:

:-x Thank you so much, Atia and Alexios! Hyker just read one of the final chapters and had a wonderful review. I'll keep you posted. I'm hoping that the agent asks for the manuscript through email, as I read online he did with some others. Saves that time and bother with printing and mailing. Seems their agency is very 'green', they want all correspondence by email.

I've missed this too!!! Unless the memory is going... I wonder what Mr. Harryhausen thinks about it, I would wager his approval was necessary, being 'intellectual property'? I'll have to imbd it to see casting and so forth, if it is indeed in production. Just don't tell me of one on Pompeii. I'm submitting on the 24th.

I think I will miss all the cheesy puppetry special effects of the original. No doubt those will be cgi'd this round.
