James Purefoy

I don't know if there is already a thread about James because I am new and there are too many threads to go through and see so I am creating one now. I LOVE the beard!!

I read a book on Cleopatra, historical fiction mind you, much like our beloved Rome, but he is just as I pictured MA.

I don't want to be fickle, but I've deserted The Philanthropist as well. Purefoy is good, but the storylines are not. I wish James would get a turn as Bond. He does 'suave' so effortlessly.

Yep, I gave up on it after the second Nigerian episode. Bad writing, IMHO, too much narration 'telling' us the story instead of showing, and oh-so predictable. I like "Hung" better, and it at least surprises me!

Excellent news for you Nomad! I thought Comic-Con would be my big chance, as San Diego and Philadelphia are the only big conventions that I'm aware of. I was hoping that the one British star of Caprica would be coming my way, since Brits usually like their history and there is a lot more (no disrespect to San Diego) history in Philly. While there were a number of Battlestar Galatica people at the Philly convention there was no Ms. Walker:(

Despite Mr. Purefoy's charisma, I tried and gave up on the Philanthropist, anyone else in my boat?

Ooh, looking forward to seeing it Nomad. James Purefoy day... has a nice ring to it. Do you get to meet him in person or observe from a distance? Curious... The only eye candy I've seen of late has been Eric Bana, in the new Sandler movie and soon in "The Time Traveler's Wife".

...and, because I am devoted to the needs of my Romies, I shall remain in San Diego long enough to get a pic of James Purefoy, who is here at Comic-Con to promote Solomon Kane!

Woo hoo!

Friday is Ray Stevenson Day (The Book of Eli), Saturday is James Purefoy Day (Solomon Kane). Now, if only Sunday were Kevin McKidd Day, the set (and the weekend) would be complete!

I believe I saw an advert last night saying it was going to be on Sunday this week! If they keep moving it every week it will be hard to retain an audience. They did tout it as the 'number one new drama of the summer'..... but I can't think of any other new dramas on network, can anyone else? Mid summer is very unusual for a new show. Here's to Paris, Atia!

Camamar, there's no need to pay to watch previous episodes. You can watch them online at NBC.com.

So far I agree with Elare that James' talent outshines the rather lackluster writing. I do enjoy the different settings each week; Nigeria, Burma/Myanmar, and Paris coming up.

Cam, each episode doesn't really connect to the other so far, (not like 'Rome'), with a new location and problem for 'Teddy' to solve.

Argh. I was happy to see that 'The Philantropist' was on Comcast On Demand --- but then I saw that they were charging to watch the episodes. Hell....I don't think I'm going to pay to watch a network TV show which I'm not sure I'm going to like all that much.

Hmmm. Need to DVR the next showing of this program so I can see if I like it enough to pay to watch previous eps...

Anyone know why "The Phil." was on Wednesday night this week? Changing after only 2 shows?

I'm finding the writing weak, given they got the original writer back. What's up with the Jesse Martin character 'narrating' all the time? A better show would act what we are supposed to know in scenes, instead of the weaker device of having a voiceover telling us all the time. James is great, but I wish I liked the show better.

Don't worry, Baby. He may have gorgeous lips, but so do you. Nobody does it better....than you. Now come to bed and bring those lips with you. And close the door, please.

No, it wasn't! Thanks Nomad! Although I must confess, I fell asleep during the middle bit:_|, and was not quite as happy as I thought I'd be with the return of the original writer. My fave scene was the moving one where his wife is painting over the son's room, and he is still in denial. Not writing it off yet!

Thanks all for the reviews and interviews.

By the way, someone was mentioning all the Rome actors, and stated that Ciaran Hinds has been absent. Although his parts have been small, he's been in "Munich", "There Will Be Blood", and I just saw him with Frances McDormand in "A Day in the Life of Mrs. Pettigrew". Now he needs a LEAD role. And although I didn't see "The Punisher", ditto for Ray Stevenson.

By the way, did anyone see "Hung" with Thomas Jane on HBO? When my Mother told me about it, and the premise, I could only laugh... Good old risk-taking HBO. Are they back?

Another interview with James, this one is by Ellen Tumposky of the Daily News.

James Purefoy, the latest British actor to land a lead role in a U.S. network show, stars as bad-boy do-gooder Teddy Rist in "The Philanthropist" on NBC.
Purefoy, 45 - who hates being asked about doing the Full Monty as Mark Antony in the HBO series "Rome" - is juggling international filming on the show with helping to raise his 12-year-old son by his ex, Holly Aird, an English actress.
He is intense about playing Teddy, who turns to globetrotting philanthropy after saving a small boy during a Nigerian flood. The trouble with Teddy, Purefoy says, "is he feels too damn much."
Is there a bit of you in Teddy's playboy persona?
I'm a serial monogamist. I've had a few partners and extraordinary experiences with all of them, but I've been in a steady relationship now for five years with a woman who makes art documentaries, and I'm very happy. I've been very lucky that way, extraordinary women.
Why are British actors getting so many plum roles in U.S. TV right now?
I wonder if we're cheaper. It could be that. Maybe there was a shortage of American actors that the public didn't know. All those guys who are in L.A. now, Damian Lewis and Kevin McKidd and Matthew Rhys and Rufus Sewell - we're all people who've worked together in theater, we all know each other. We're a very close-knit community.
Did they give you advice?
I spoke to Damian and Kevin because they both worked with NBC. I said, "Tell me the truth, how do they treat you." They told me it's tough, the scheduling is punishing. You have to really fight for creativity because you're actually spending most of your life learning lines.
Why don't you do an American accent in the show?
I was very aware we were going to be filming in Third World countries mainly. Filming in the Third World is just a very different thing. Every day you're kind of risking your life when you go to the set. You don't know if you're going to hit a car or a baboon or if you're going to have rocks dropped on you from bridges in townships. I just thought I don't want to be worrying about whether I'd done my R right. I look at somebody like Clive Owen and I don't know if he's doing an American accent or an English accent at all, and nobody really cares anymore.
Was the role physically challenging?
I took a 4-inch tear through my hamstring, and a few weeks after that I was running across an icy road, slipped and tore three ligaments in the back of my heel. My stunt double has been working a lot harder for me since then.
Was your nude scene in "Rome" a good career move?
I never think about it unless a journalist brings it up. It wasn't a big deal. The first time I was ever on stage I was 17, the lights went up, I was naked. I'm comfortable with it. We're all naked at least twice a day.
